Original vs Remake

What Capcom has confirmed about the remake—and what still comes only from the 2000 original.

Resident Evil Veronica is officially described as a remake of 2000's Resident Evil Code: Veronica. Steam says it preserves the essence of the original while adding modernized gameplay, a reimagined storyline and detailed graphics.

A June 2026 producer interview says Capcom views Code Veronica as important as a numbered Resident Evil entry and chose the shorter Veronica title to align with recent mainline subtitle conventions.

Producer interviews describe the remake as third-person and say developers from the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remake teams are involved. Capcom has not yet shown the puzzle design, campaign structure or full combat system.

PlayStation Blog reports that parts of the original story will be adjusted to fit the series lore established since 2000. Capcom has not identified the scenes or character arcs that will change.

Returning players can expect the same basic premise, not the same room routes, item locations, boss order or cutscenes.

New players do not need to play the original first. The remake's current synopsis explains the essential setup around Claire, Chris, Umbrella and Rockfort Island.
